🔍 Grammar Focus

Understanding the grammar behind the vocabulary is the key to creating your own sentences!

Verbs of Motion: Бегать vs. Идти

In the video, you heard two important verbs: бегать (to run) and идти (to walk/go). These are basic “verbs of motion,” a key topic in Russian.

  • Идти (ee-dTEE) describes walking in one direction, right now. It’s a specific, ongoing action.

    • Anya says: Я иду медленно. (I am walking slowly.) - She is doing it at this very moment.
  • Бегать (BYEH-gat’) can describe the general activity of running, or running in multiple directions (back and forth).

    • Ivan says: Я очень люблю бегать. (I really love to run.) - He’s talking about the activity in general.
    • He also says: Я бегаю быстро! (I am running fast!) - Here, it’s used for the action happening on the treadmill.

For beginners, the key takeaway is that Russian has different verbs for different types of movement. You’ll learn more as you advance!

Adjective Agreement

Notice how adjectives change to match the nouns they describe.

  • Тяжёлые гантели (Heavy dumbbells) - The adjective ends in -ые because гантели is plural.
  • Холодная вода (Cold water) - The adjective ends in -ая because вода is a feminine noun.
  • Иван сильный (Ivan is strong) - The adjective ends with a consonant because Иван is masculine.
