Grammar Focus: Present Tense Verbs
In this story, we see several verbs in the present tense (3rd person singular — “he/she/it”):
- он пьёт (he drinks) — from the infinitive пить (to drink).
- он спит (he sleeps) — from the infinitive спать (to sleep).
- он любит (he loves/likes) — from the infinitive любить (to love/like).
Notice how Russian verb endings change depending on the subject.
Context & Usage Notes
In Russian, there are two distinct words for “cat”:
- Кот (kot): Specifically refers to a male cat. This is what we used for Barsik.
- Кошка (koshka): Refers to a female cat, but is also used as the general word for “cat” as a species.
If you don’t know the gender of a cat on the street, it is most natural to say кошка.
