Grammar Focus: Present Tense Verbs

In this story, we see several verbs in the present tense (3rd person singular — “él/ella/usted”):

  • bebe (drinks) — from the infinitive beber (to drink).
  • duerme (sleeps) — from the infinitive dormir (to sleep, a stem-changing o→ue verb).

Also notice the phrase “a Leo no le gustan los perros”. Spanish uses the verb gustar differently than English. Literally, it means “dogs are not pleasing to Leo.”

Context & Usage Notes

In Spanish, adjectives usually come after the noun they describe.

  • El gato inteligente (The smart cat). Literally: The cat smart.
  • Una pelota roja (A red ball). Literally: A ball red.

Also, remember that nouns have gender. El gato (masculine), la pelota (feminine). Adjectives must agree in gender and number with the noun!
